Most people recommend the wrong tool because they're afraid to say "this isn't for you." I know, because I used to do the same. The Fluke 177 can measure AC/DC voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency — all great — but it doesn't have a dedicated "sensor test" mode. For quick diagnostics, you often need a multimeter with low-impedance voltage measurement (LoZ) to avoid ghost voltages, or a dedicated sensor tester.
In my experience, the Fluke 179 (with LoZ) or even a cheaper automotive multimeter with a specific sensor function is better for that job. I once recommended the 177 to a technician who only needed to test inductive sensors (ugh!). He ended up sending it back. Now I ask first: "What are you measuring? If it's just proximity sensors, save your money and get a $60 specialized tester.
